So Tuesday morning we loaded everything up on the trailer to
head back to Wichita and everything seemed to be going very smoothly…until we
went to load the dogs. They had been running
around in the yard the night before and all morning but when we went out after breakfast,
Dallas was the only one we could find.
What a terrible feeling to realize that Colt and Aspen were gone! Peyton
and I drove to the potato barn, the feedlot and all over the pastures near the
house. They were nowhere to be
found. For the next 4 days we looked,
called, sent out alerts, and tried not to panic. Getting back to Wichita in time for me to go
to Tulsa became a challenge, but God provided another Insanity certification training
in of all places – Amarillo! – on the same Saturday. So I drove to Amarillo, did the training,
drove back to Dalhart and we left the next morning for Kansas. Even though the dogs were still lost, we left
their kennels and dog food at the ranch, and kept believing that we would somehow
find them. There were so many people
looking and staying actively involved!
We had a little panic that evening when mom called and said
that a yellow and a black lab had been spotted in Dalhart but the black one had
ran off after the police tried to capture them.
She called the animal shelter to make sure they knew these dogs had
owners, because they euthanize unclaimed animals on Monday mornings. No one answered so we all left messages and
planned to call first thing Monday morning. That night we stayed at the Holiday
Inn Express and felt a little hope that maybe the dogs were found.
All this was going on AND we were in the process of
negotiating on the farmhouse in Mount Hope…and trying to figure out where were going
to stay until we could move in. We did
find a place to keep the dogs…after a Facebook plea the Jobbins family offered
to keep them in an empty fenced kennel behind their house. We delivered Dallas and hoped she would be
joined by her cohorts soon L.
